How Modern Electronic Music is Created

Electronic music – a relatively new genre, which, nevertheless, is becoming more and more popular every day. The very first electronic music appeared in the early 30’s, when Lev Termenom, was invented the first “synthesizer” – a rocket switch.

But in the modern sense of electronic music appeared much later – approximately in the seventies of the XX-th century. It was then appear a few of the main styles such as Trance, House, etc., which are still among the most popular.

Electronic music was constantly improving and becoming more complex as new instruments and musical ideas appeared. In the eighties there was a significant increase in the popularity of electronic music – it is then that appeared such well-known hits as “Pump Up The Volume” by MARRS and “Blue Monday” by New Order. At the same time, a new direction in electronic music begins to develop – techno.

Principle of creating electronic music

In general, the principle of creating any electronic music is as follows: first you need to create a melody using different sounds (this can be done using special programs or using a MIDI-keyboard); then this melody is “pasted” into a drumbeat and other sounds are added to it – all this is also done on the computer; as a result, you get a pretty interesting and catchy composition.

As we all know the important thing in this process is a synthesizer, namely on it are received those beautiful sounds, which can remind on character as on string instruments, so on wind instruments, so on angry and roaring basses, so on soothing atmospheric underlays.

It used to be that musicians working in this style spent huge sums of money on physical analog synthesizers and crammed all the available space in the studio with them. Many of you probably saw the huge analog synthesizers of those days, with lots of knobs and switches that you needed to get the tone you wanted.

But now we are in the XXI century and there is no need in all this anymore, all these devices are more than replaced today by usual desktop computer or even notebook computer. This is how modern “electronic workers” work. Cumbersome and expensive analog synthesizers were replaced by cheaper software synthesizers – VSTi, which are not inferior in sound quality to their analog counterparts.

For percussion and drum parts, samples, that is, ready-made sounds that can be freely purchased, are used. The whole composition is composed and assembled in a special program called DAW. DAW is actually a whole studio on your computer.

Of course, creating electronic music on the computer is not as simple a process as it may seem. At least you need to have a good ear for music, be able to play at least one musical instrument and knowledge in sound synthesis will be needed.

Not many people are able to make a really good arrangement with professional sound, but it is possible to learn how to do it all today. At the moment, there are articles and video tutorials on creating music that clearly show the process of creating and arranging. As they say, talent is only ten percent of success, the other 90 percent is hard work.
