Cadence Classics: Their Twenty Greatest Hits

Everly Brothers, The

album cover

The Sweet Side of Early Rock

Rock and roll was busting out all over when Archie Bleyer, the honcho of Cadence Records, gave "Bye Bye Love" to his new act the Everly Brothers in 1957. He wasn't, however, expecting a rock and roll single. He considered the song, which was written by the enormously gifted husband-and-wife team of Boudleaux and Felice Bryant, a fairly straightforward post-breakup ditty in the style of Hank Williams. It didn't turn out that way: Don and Phil Everly added forcefully strummed acoustic guitars and a crackling up-tempo beat. And then they sang "Bye Bye Love" together, in a honeyed close harmony that recalls the family bands of a much earlier time.
